'Hell House' filming wraps up

Five years after an unknown malfunction causes the death of multiple tourgoers at a Halloween haunted house opening night, a documentary film crew goes back to the scene of the incident to try to piece together what really happened.

If that sounds like the script for a feature horror movie, that's because it is, as the filming of "Hell House" wrapped up today at The Haunting at the Waldorf Hotel, located at 6235 Interchange Road in Lehighton, right next to the Country Junction.

Parole, probation hearings held

Carbon County judges conducted parole/probation hearings on petitions filed by the adult probation office against defendants currently on supervision for violating the terms of their release.

Rodney Green, 42, of Lehighton, had his probation revoked on a charge of criminal trespass on petition filed by probation officer Jillian C. McGinley for violating conditions of failing to report for twice-a-month urine screens which violated the zero-tolerance provision.

Walk Sunday to benefit food banks

Numerous Tamaqua area churches and civic organizations are getting ready for Hunger Weekend, an event aimed at raising awareness of the local hunger issue in providing food to two community food banks.

According to Hunger Weekend organizer Paul Dodson, food banks at the Tamaqua Salvation Army and at Trinity UCC will benefit from the event.

Tamaqua churches and community and school organizations have been invited to participate by making cash donations, gathering food items and by participating in the Hunger Walk at 2 p.m. Sunday through the streets of the community.

Schuylkill Commissioners approve personnel

Schuylkill County commissioners have approved a number of personnel moves.

Patricia Valedon, Coaldale, was promoted to clerk 3 from clerk typist for the Children and Youth Services agency. She'll be paid $13.54 an hour.

At the county nursing home at Rest Haven, Amanda Sterner, Cressona, was hired as a per diem nurses' aid at $13 an hour. Deanna Improta, Pottsville, and Holly Boltz, Hamburg, were hired as part-time nurses' aids at $11.72 an hour each.

Several more parking spaces in downtown Lehighton are going to be eliminated in the near future. Mayor Wilbur Bauchspies said the borough must comply with an agreement it has with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation which requires a change from angle parking around the borough park to parallel parking.

With nearly 1.6 million Pennsylvanians living below the poverty line, the House Majority Policy Committee recently announced it will continue its efforts to study the barriers individuals face in reaching self-sufficiency in the Commonwealth. The committee has appointed Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike) to co-chair the "Life Skills 101" section of the initiative's next steps.

HAVERFORD, Pa. (AP) — A commencement speaker on Sunday blasted college students as "immature" and "arrogant" for protesting another speaker who then decided to withdraw.

William Bowen, former president of Princeton University, used his commencement speech at Haverford College outside Philadelphia to criticize students who campaigned against Robert Birgeneau, former chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley.

Monkey still on loose after fire at Southern Pa. rescue

HANOVER, Pa. (AP) — Volunteers at an exotic animal rescue in southern Pennsylvania are still looking for a monkey that got loose and ran away during a fire that destroyed the facility.

The East Coast Exotic Animal Rescue in Adams County burned down early Saturday. Two residents escaped, and most of the animals were saved from the fire. Two cats died.

Lehigh Relay for Life celebrates recovery, honors victims

Thankfully, Friday's heavy rains broke just in time to make most all 24 hours of this weekend's American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event at Northern Lehigh High School's Bulldog Community Stadium a success.

"Aside from the rain, it's been going really well so far," said Courtney Totten, Relay for Life staff partner at the American Cancer Society's Bethlehem location.

This was the first time since this particular event's inception in 2007 that it was held in Slatington.

American Red Cross responds to single-family fire in Pottsville

The American Red Cross Schuylkill Chapter Disaster Action Team responded to a single-family fire Saturday on Harrison Street in Pottsville.

The Red Cross provided five adults with lodging and will continue to follow-up with the individuals, as needed.

John Thorpe says Olympian belongs here

Wearing a T-shirt that read "Keep Jim Thorpe in Jim Thorpe," the great Native American Indian athlete's grandson – John Thorpe of Lake Tahoe, CA – is adamant in his desire to keep his grandfather's body in the twenty-thousand pound, red granite mausoleum where he was laid to rest on Memorial Day of 1957.

"My brother, Michael Koehler, and I – as well as our entire side of the family – are behind the town in their legal battle to keep my grandfather where he belongs – right here in the town that bears his name," said Thorpe.

Towamensing off to a strong start

The Towamensing Yankees opened the Keystone Senior Babe Ruth season with a 3-1-1 record.

The team posted a pair of wins over the Forks Township Falcons and also downed the Franklin Township Hurricanes.

Cody Peters had two hits, one of them a double, and knocked in three runs to help lead the Towamensing Yankees to a 7-1 victory over the Forks Township Falcons.
