Thursday was declared Red Day (Renew, Energize, Donate) for all Keller Williams offices around the country. All offices were closed, and each office picked a local project to

Bears stun Stroudsburg

STROUDSBURG - Pleasant Valley has struggled to manufacture runs all season long.

If the Bears were going to keep their season alive, they would have to find a way to do that on Tuesday against a Stroudsburg team that was undefeated in the Mountain Valley Conference play.

Thanks to a stellar performance on the mound from senior Chris Burke and just enough offense, Pleasant Valley upset top-seeded and heavily favored Stroudsburg, 4-1, in an MVC playoff semifinal.

Pleasant Valley breezed to an easy softball victory over Allen on Tuesday.

It took Pleasant Valley five innings to gain an 11-1 non-league victory over Allen.

Jordan Meckes led the Bears (16-4, 11-1 MVC) with three hits and and three RBIs.

Kiersten Griesback also helped out, hitting a home run and knocking in two runs.

Tracey Duebler picked up the win, giving up just two hits and striking out six.

Students bring sunny messages to residents

Weatherly Area High Schools students recently delivered handwritten "Happy Spring" cards to residents of Weatherwood and the Heritage Hill Senior Living Community as part of a service learning project. The students brought smiles to the faces of 300 residents as they delivered the cards and spent time visiting and chatting. The service learning project is part of the school's Family and Consumer Science Class, instructed by Bobbi Ann Kufro.

Long Pond man is facing DUI

Andre Bowie, 43, of Long Pond, is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol as a result of an incident at 10:15 p.m. May 5 at the intersection of Interstate 80 and Route 115 in Monroe County.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police said they were assisting a disabled motorist on Route 115 when they observed Bowie driving a vehicle southbound on the wrong lanes of travel, which are separated by a physical barrier.

Those words from part-time Nesquehoning Police officer Steven Homanko came over the scanner at 6:22 Monday night after he lost control of his cruiser along Route 209 between Nesquehoning and Jim Thorpe and collided with an oncoming vehicle carrying a Pleasant Valley Elementary School teacher and his wife.

Unhitched train brings Tamaqua traffic to standstill

A train pulling 100 cars became uncoupled Wednesday morning in downtown Tamaqua, blocking intersections and bringing traffic to a prolonged halt on two main arteries and side streets.

Barriers needed?

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has told the Lower Towamensing Board of Supervisors it is considering placing barriers on Route 248 at the intersection with Gun Club Road.

There have been many serious crashes at the site between Parryville and Bowmanstown over the years, including fatalities.

The proposed barriers would prevent eastbound motorists from turning left onto Gun Club Road and prevent motorists coming out of Gun Club Road to turn east toward Bowmanstown on the highway.

Frankly, the sooner such barriers are installed, the better.

Weissport Recreation Committee will hold its annual giant yard sale at 9 a.m. May 24. The rain date is May 25.

There will be over a hundred vendors selling a variety of household items, baby items, toys and furniture.

Anyone who wants to donate baked goods can drop them off that morning or call Tammy Solt at 610-377-4147.

Vendor setup time is 7 a.m. Spaces are available.

Local musician to join All-State Lions Band

Members of the Nesquehoning Lions Club recently presented Panther Valley High School sophomore, Jordan Reis with a check for $125 to help him join the 2014 All-State Lions Band as it travels to Canada to attend the Lions International Convention this summer.

Reis, who plays the trombone in the Panther Valley High School band, will first meet with other young musicians from across the state to rehearse at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College for several days before departing for Toronto.

Marian Catholic High School student Matthew Karnish, son of Gary and Chris Karnish of Nesquehoning, was honored May 7 by the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the American Chemical Society after he was ranked as a section winner on a chemistry exam given by the society. Schools are divided into geographic regions for the exams, with Marian's region including public and private schools from Wilkes-Barre, Nanticoke, Mountaintop and Hazleton. The awards were presented during a banquet held at the Linksat Hemlock Creek Restaurant in Bloomsburg.

May 15, 1995 Eric Levandusky pitches a one-hit shutout to lead Palmerton to a 10-0 Colonial League victory over rival Northern Lehigh. Levandusky walks just one and strikes out 10 in the five-inning contest. He receives plenty of support from his offense, which finishes with 14 hits. Jason Hernandez collects three hits, including a double and homer, and knocks in three runs. Ryan Waibel and Ivan George each add two hits and an RBI while Nathan Hunsicker and Dean Hager both contribute a pair of hits.

Kathy Keip and Jeanne Blonsky of Tamaqua look to add to their collection at the Innovative Bead Expo, which took place May 3 and 4 at Ag Hall at the Allentown Fairgrounds in Allentown. The pair make bracelets as gifts for friends and family members. A variety of stones, beads and jewelry-making supplies were available during the event from over 20 vendors.

Insurance carrier dumps Lansford

Lansford borough is looking for a new insurance carrier.

Philadelphia Indemnity, which carries the combined policy for property, auto, equipment floater, crime and general liability, informed the borough it is dropping its coverage.

Borough council President Martin Ditsky said there have been 20 claims against the insurance company in the past three years, prompting the cancellation.

A civil case of Vazza versus the borough of Lansford was the main reason for nonrenewal, according to council. No other details of the case were available.

Lehighton boy struggles with apraxia

Eleven-year-old Jacobi Zigarski looks like your typical youngster.

He's good-looking, clean and has a ready smile although sheepish, with a reason.

Jacobi finds it difficult to communicate. He has a condition called apraxia, which makes it difficult for him to speak.

He is a fifth-grader at Lehighton Area Middle School. Although he has been struggling with the speech defect virtually all his life, it was a speech therapist in Franklin Township Elementary School who first diagnosed his condition last year.

Drug drop-off boxes available

Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) announced that several prescription drug drop-off boxes have been placed at police stations across Carbon County.

The boxes are intended for drugs that are either no longer being used or expired.

Bid for cyberschool work is rescheduled

A scheduled public bid opening for site work at Commonwealth Connections Academy Wednesday afternoon has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. May 28.

The public cyberschool spent $1.1 million to purchase the 10-acre site of the former J.E. Morgan Antique Car Museum in June 2013. The property is on the corner of Cold Spring Road and Route 443 in West Penn Township.
