Drainage project contract awarded

Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday chose a Slatington company to make stormwater drainage improvements to a Coaldale street.

With Commissioner George F. Halcovage absent, Commissioner Gary J. Hess and Chairman Frank J. Staudenmeier awarded the $33,682.50 contract to Dirt Work Solutions for the project along Phillips Street.

Dirt Works was the lowest of five bidders for the job, which is a 2012 Community Development Block Grant project.

Borough, authority split fees for street project

After convening for an executive session to discuss a legal matter, the Walnutport Authority carried on its meeting as usual Tuesday night.

In regard to the authority's upcoming Oak Street project, which involves construction of approximately 1,050 linear feet of water main, engineer Jason Newhard said that while the Community Development Block Grant project is fully funded for its construction costs, its engineering costs are not.

Schuylkill woman facing theft count

A Schuylkill County woman is facing a charge of retail theft.

State police at Schuylkill Haven have charged Brandy Darrow, 36, of McAdoo, for an incident at the Kohl's Department Store, in the Fairlane Village Mall, in Norwegian Township.

At 3:33 p.m. Wednesday Darrow was observed by store security removing shoes from boxes and concealing them in her cart along with a shirt. She then left the store without paying for the items.

She was arraigned by on-call District Judge Anthony Kilker, of Shenandoah, and was released on $15,000 unsecured bail.

Students show off artwork; fundraiser benefits school

Support is indeed a two-way street at St. John Neumann Regional School.

Further proof of that could be seen at the Drive for Kids fundraiser during the school's annual art show on Tuesday.

The fundraiser at the school's Palmerton campus benefits the after-school program.

Inside the gymnasium, the walls and floor space were covered with a sea of artwork created by students at both the school's Palmerton and Slatington campuses.

Lehighton falls short

STROUDSBURG On Tuesday, the Mountain Valley Conference spring sports postseason got off to a stunning start with a pair of upsets in the baseball semifinals.

Lehighton came close to adding to the surprises in Wednesday's softball semifinals with an incredible rally against Stroudsburg.

But in the end, the Indians' comeback from a huge deficit fell just short as they dropped a 10-8 decision.

No. 2 seed Stroudsburg jumped out to a commanding 10-run lead. The Mountaineers scored four runs in the second inning and followed up with six more runs in the third inning.

Tamaqua's observance of Armed Forces Week will be climaxed this evening with a gigantic military parade, featuring Army, Navy and Marine troops and equipment along with military musical organizations.

The parade will move promptly at 7 o'clock from the extreme west end of Broad Street eastward, disbanding at Maff's garage at the extreme east end of the community.

Relay for Life set in Slatington

Cancer never sleeps.

That sad, yet true, fact of life is enough to provide the impetus behind the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Upper Lehigh County.

The event will be held from 4 p.m. Friday through 4 p.m. Saturday at Northern Lehigh High School's Bulldog Community Stadium, 1 Bulldog Lane, Slatington.

It will kick off with an opening ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday. The survivors ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., followed by the luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. The fight back ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday with the closing ceremony at 4 p.m.

No time frame for crash report

The state police accident reconstruction team continues to work on determining exactly what happened when a police cruiser crashed into an oncoming car on Route 209 Monday evening.

Part-time Nesquehoning patrolman Steven Homanko was driving the car that crossed the line and struck a car, killing the front-seat passenger and severely injuring the driver.

Trooper David Peters of the Hazleton barracks said, "There is no time frame. In these particular cases, everything will be looked at and relooked at to make sure everything is (accurately documented)."

Weatherly HS Senior of the Month for April

Courtney Dickson, daughter of Gaylon and Melanie Dickson, Weatherly, has been named Senior of the Month for April at Weatherly Area High School.

Courtney is the captain of the girls' soccer team, as well as a member of SPARC, the yearbook club, and Weatherly Area High School's chapter of the National Honor Society.

Courtney is enrolled in dual enrollment and AP classes at the high school.

North Carbon dances away with a big win

It came down to the last event, but after all the dust settled and the music stopped, it was the North Carbon County seniors, comprising Panther Valley, Weatherly and Jim Thorpe senior centers, who came out on top in this year's Carbon County Senior Games.

The final score was North Carbon County, 694; South Carbon County, 678.

Going into the final event, 18 points separated the teams, with South leading, but North rallied, earning 38 points for the three dances.

Schuylkill County crashes investigated

State police at Schuylkill Haven reported on the following crashes probed by troopers on Schuylkill County roadways.

A sport utility vehicle and a tractor with trailer rig crashed at 7:01 a.m. on Tuesday along Geary Wolfe Road in Pine Grove Township. Troopers said Tyrone Bronson, 45, of Georgetown, S.C., was driving a 2000 Freightliner rig northbound while Jessica L. Matuella, 25, of Pine Grove, was operating a 2010 Ford Edge southbound.

Tamaqua up less than 1 mill

During a meeting Tuesday, the finance committee of the Tamaqua School Board recommended a 2014-15 budget which includes a slight increase of 0.93, less than a full mill. The school board is expected to approve the budget during next week's meeting.

The projected expenses for the 2014-15 budget are $28.7 million with total revenue estimated at $26.3 million. The beginning fund balance will be $5 million; but at the end of the 2014-15 year the fund balance will be reduced to $2.4 million.

Beltzville Lions presented a $100 donation to the LehightonMemorial Library. President Jim Logue presented the donationto Becky Wanamaker, librarian. The club also donated fundsto Weissport Recreation Committee in support of the recent egg hunt. The club will also be serving a meal to the needy families

in June at Zion United Church of Christ, Lehighton.

Attempted break-in being probed

State police at Fern Ridge are investigating an attempted burglary at a Carbon County home.

Troopers said two suspects attempted to enter the property of John Bargeman, 35, of 11 Lennox Ave., Albrightsville, Penn Forest Township, at 9:19 p.m. Monday. The two fled the scene when confronted by Bargeman.

The two suspects were described to be white males, in their early 20s.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call troopers at 570-646-2271.


Weatherly HS Senior of the Month for May

Garret Titus, son of Kyle and Allyson Titus, Weatherly, has been named Senior of the Month for May at Weatherly Area High School.

Garret is the high school senior representative to the Weatherly Area School Board. He serves as president of the Skiing and Snowboarding club, and is a member of the golf team, the varsity baseball team, the high school marching and concert bands, and SPARC. He is a four-year letter winner in golf.

In the community, Garret is an active member of St. Matthew's UCC Church. He is employed by Giant Food Stores in Hazleton.

Schuylkill Haven driver charged in fatal crash

The driver of the car involved in a crash that took the life of her passenger last July has been charged with homicide by vehicle and other counts.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said they have charged Amie L. Wiscount, 32, of Schuylkill Haven, with homicide by vehicle-while driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person, DUI, careless driving and driving on roadways laned for traffic.

Shupp leads strong showing

EAST STROUDSBURG - Austin Shupp has cleared every obstacle in his path with ease this season.

The Palmerton senior has left opponents in his wake, rewriting the school record books while establishing himself as one of the state's best hurdlers in the process.

It was only fitting, then, that on the first day of the District 11 Track and Field Championships Shupp smashed one of the last challenges in front of him instead of jumping over it.

Bears take care of business

Top-seeded Pleasant Valley could've looked ahead, even just a bit, to a potential spot in the Mountain Valley Conference softball championship game.

But that isn't what head coach Steve Caffrey's team is all about.

All the Bears were focused on was the task at hand a semifinal matchup against Pocono Mountain East. And they proved that from their first inning of play on Wednesday.

The Bears scored a pair of runs in their first atbat and added runs in each of the next five frames to close out the Cardinals,12-2, in six innings.
