Memorial Day Service

A Community Memorial Day Service will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 25, at First Congregational Church, Coaldale.

The Community Choir will sing several patriotic songs honoring the veterans.

Anyone who is interested in singing in the choir is invited to attend the rehearsal at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the church.

Next week's schedule is as follows:

Sunday, May 18, 9 a.m. Morning Worship; 10 a.m. Sunday School for all ages.

Monday, May 19, 7 p.m. Church Board meeting.

Tuesday, May 20, Women's Class meeting.

Palmerton woman charged with retail theft

Mahoning Township Police have arrested a Palmerton woman on retail theft charges.

On April 24, Mahoning Township Police investigated a retail theft at Walmart on Route 443.

Loss Prevention reported a female had concealed items inside of a cart and left the store with the merchandise failing to pay for it. The female was stopped by officers on Route 443 in a white Ford Focus, with the stolen items in the trunk of her vehicle.

As schools around the U.S. implement national Common Core learning standards, parents trying to help their kids with math homework say that adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing has become as complicated as calculus.

Gravely ill Pa. firefighter escorted home

HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — Firefighters from more than a dozen Pennsylvania fire departments escorted a gravely ill colleague home.

Twenty-three-year-old Robert Sweigart, a firefighter with Myerstown's Goodwill Fire Co., was being treated for his second bout of leukemia but his treatments weren't working.

Karen Sweigart tells the Lebanon Daily News (http://bit.ly/1iNxuYh) her son decided he wanted to die at home.

NEW YORK (AP) — Oprah Winfrey and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton surprised Barbara Walters on Thursday as the legendary newswoman taped her final edition of "The View" to end a five-decade career on television.

Actor Michael Douglas, a longtime friend and frequent subject for Walters' interviews, also dropped by for the tribute, which airs Friday on ABC at 11 a.m. EDT.

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (AP) — For all the screaming and carrying on, their neighbors thought they'd won the lottery. But it was a lumpy old sofa stuffed with $40,000 in cash that had three young roommates raising a ruckus.

And here's the other side of the ticket: They returned the money to the 91-year-old widow whose couch had been given away.

Jury finds doctor guilty of sexual assault

A Carbon County jury has found a Mahoning psychologist guilty of sexual assault against a patient. The jury deliberated for four and a half hours this afternoon.

Dr. Michael Degilio went on trial Monday on charges by Mahoning Township police with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault, and indecent exposure.

The charges were filed when a then 40-year-old woman said Degilio, a psychologist, had her perform a sexual act during an office visit in February 2009.

Annual Youth Field Day needs donations

The next Monroe County Youth Field Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6. In order for it to be as successful as others in the past, it needs the support from the community.

Last year's event had 197 participating children. Since 1994, over 3,500 youngsters have participated.

Teen hurt when driver strikes parked car

A Tamaqua teen is shaken and badly bruised following an unusual accident in Tamaqua on Thursday afternoon.

Nick Zehner, son of Shawn and Amy Zehner of Tamaqua, was walking home from school at 2:45 p.m. with a friend. The teens were at the intersection of Lehigh and Lafayette Street when they saw a blue Chevy Cobalt approaching, headed west on Lafayette Street. When Nick saw the car go through the stop sign at the intersection, he tried to get out of the way, running to shelter behind a parked car.

Woman cited for urinating in public

A Tamaqua woman has been cited by borough police after she allegedly urinated on someone else's property on May 6.

Valerie K. Nattress, with a last known address on Schuylkill Avenue, reportedly was walking in the area to the rear of 330 W. Rowe St., at 9:38 p.m., when she decided to relieve her bladder next to a parked truck. On the other side of that truck stood the owner's wife and a neighbor, who had been engaged in a conversation. The women confronted Nattress, who appeared to be intoxicated.

A 'Chair-ity' event

The Penn Kidder Campus of the Jim Thorpe Area School District was abuzz Saturday morning with the annual science fair and art show.

One of the highlights of the art show was a group of five chairs decorated and donated by the eighth-grade art class to the "Chair-ity Fundraising Event," which is sponsored by the Penn Kidder Library Center.

The fundraiser, an auction, which will take place in July, features a wide variety of chairs decorated by local artists, signed by sports teams or donated by businesses.

Man gets prison term for role in meth lab and burglaries

A former Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Thursday on charges stemming from his part in operating a methamphetamine lab and burglaries.

Todd Greene, 39, now residing in Harrisburg, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve a total of one day less 12 to one day less 24 months in prison, followed by two years of probation. Greene previously pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, receiving stolen property and operating a meth lab.

Teen pleads in JT school gun case

A teen who brought a gun into the Jim Thorpe High School late last year entered a guilty plea in Carbon County court on Thursday.

Sabir Duncan Johnson, 18, of Albrightsville, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a weapon on school property.

He was arrested by Jim Thorpe police after they responded to the high school on Nov. 27, 2013, to a report of a student with a gun.

On scene police recovered a Black Ops air-propelled revolver with six bullets in the school. The gun was described as a BB gun.

The Tamaqua commercial artist's talent was so well received during America's Golden Age of Illustration (1880s-1920s) that the Cream of Wheat Corporation selected four of his renderings for their advertising.

At the time, it was a very big deal.

The Cream of Wheat company was a pioneer in using warm, four-color illustrations to promote their product.

They carefully selected the nation's top illustrators to propel their wholesome image.

Kidder Township Officer promoted to full time

Earlier this year Kidder Township hired John Pruitte Jr. as a part-time police officer. Thursday evening Pruitte was promoted to full time as a replacement for recently retired Cpl. Bruce Berger. Pruitte will be earning $21.39 per hour in his new position.

Pruitte's promotion brings the total number of full-time officers to six, with an additional three part-time officers completing the ranks.

Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St., Lehighton will hold a 9 a.m. Sunday worship. Music will be provided by the Trinity Praise Band. Guest pastor, the Rev. Gerald Rounds presides. Coffeehouse fellowship follows.

Sunday School classes meet for students ages 3 through grade 12 at 10:30 a.m. The final session before the summer break is Sunday.

Author to sign new book in Jim Thorpe

Amy L. Gale will sign copies of her new book, "Blissful Tragedy" from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday at the Friends of the Dimmick Library Book Store, 58 Broadway in Jim Thorpe.

Gale's book tells the story of an ambitious young woman who, about to start the job of her dreams, gets sidetracked by a budding romance with a captivating singer in a rock 'n' roll band.
