When you are in high school, you think nothing bad can happen to you if you get behind the wheel and drive while drunk.

But bad things can happen quickly and without warning.

Jim Thorpe Area High School's Students Against Destructive Decisions and St. Luke's Hospital - Miners Campus illustrated that Thursday morning during a mock crash outside the school. Four students, Tonya Ritter, Alex Heydt, Christian Fields and Gavrielle Mele, portrayed victims in a crash in which no one was wearing their seat belts and everyone was drinking.

Doctor guilty in sex case

A Carbon County jury panel of seven men and five women deliberated for about four and a half hours on Thursday before finding a county psychologist guilty of making a patient perform a sexual act.

Dr. Michael T. Degilio, 45, of Penn Forest Township, was found guilty of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault and indecent exposure.

The first count is a felony and the other two are misdemeanors.

Schuylkill driver dies in crash on Thursday

A Schuylkill County driver died on Thursday morning after his vehicle crossed Route 209 and crashed into a tractor trailer rig just outside Port Carbon.

State police at Schuylkill Haven identified the deceased as Scott B. Bedford, 31, of Pottsville, Branch Township.

It's a good bet that most of us couldn't name the person who spoke at our high school graduation, let alone remember anything about the message itself.

The most prominent speaker I heard at a graduation was Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who became the sixth of only 12 men to step on the moon. In 1996, he spoke at my nephew's graduation from Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida but I can't recall anything about his speech.

Jim Thorpe celebrates birthday of namesake this weekend

The town of Jim Thorpe will celebrate the life and legacy of its Native American namesake this weekend. The 19th annual Jim Thorpe Birthday Celebration will take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday.

Festivities will kick off with a Native American tribute featuring Don Wild Eagle at the Jim Thorpe Mausoleum at 10:30 Saturday.

Carbon pension funding decision pays off

Carbon County officials made a decision a few years ago that is paying off today.

The county retirement board Thursday discussed pension benefits and an action that the state made over a decade ago that is causing major headaches for school districts, state agencies and some counties.

Robert Crampsie, county controller and secretary to the board, said that in 2001, state legislators increased pension benefits for themselves 50 percent and other state pension members, including public schools, by 25 percent.

Charity challenge

USA Martial Arts and fitness director Jon Bonner is offering the public the opportunity to take part in a Charity Challenge 5K Run/Walk in an effort to raise funds for one's favorite nonprofit organization. The event will be held on May 17 at the Owl Creek Reservoir and will include a One Mile Kid's Fun Run.

The race will be professionally timed by Pretzel City Sports of Reading and music will be provided by DJ "Party Tyme."

Refreshments will be available.

Monroe woman facing theft count

A Monroe County woman is facing a charge of retail theft following an incident that occurred on Wednesday.

State police at Fern Ridge said Catherine Ortiz, of Effort, allegedly removed $24.46 worth of merchandise from Kinsley's ShopRite in Chestnuthill Township about 4:45 p.m. without paying for it.

A.J. Domines, pastor of the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown, certainly never forgot where he came from and for the third year in a row has brought members of his congregation to the Panther Valley area to help give back to the community he once called home.

Domines, a 1992 Panther Valley High School graduate, along with Colleen Sites, youth director for the church, and approximately 17 young members, recently prepared and served lunch to area residents at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lansford.

Local police to target aggressive drivers

Mahoning Township and Weatherly Police Departments recently announced enforcement activities as part of a Special Aggressive Driving Funding Project.

Police will be targeting motorists exhibiting aggressive-driving behaviors such as running red lights, speeding and tailgating.

Those roadways involved include routes 443 and 902 in Mahoning Township, and Route 4010 or State Street in Weatherly.

A significant number of these crashes are the result of distracted driving, following too closely, passing in no passing zones and driving at unsafe speeds.

Free Social Security workshop planned

A free Maximizing Your Social Security workshop will take place at 7 p.m. June 10, at Ss. Peter and Paul School Hall, 307 Coal St., Lehighton. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Registration is at 6:30 p.m.

The program, sponsored by the Beltzville Lions Club, is open to anyone who wants to learn what will affect their Social Security benefits.

The program will be presented by Joe Henry, a member of the Beltzville Lions Club, who will share information prepared by Allianz InsuranceCo.

The seminar will conclude with a question-and-answer period. Free refreshments will be served.

Woman charged with assault

A Tamaqua woman was arrested on May 9 following a fight with her mother.

Alyssa Bensinger, 25, who uses multiple Tamaqua addresses, reportedly went to the Catawissa Street home of her mother at 7 p.m. to pick up some personal items. Bensinger's two young children were at the home under their grandmother's care.

Bensinger, who is only allowed supervised visitation rights, attempted to take the 3-year-old boy with her. When her mother stopped the attempt, she was slapped, punched and bitten by her daughter.

SWIFTWATER Tracy Deubler admitted she was nervous all week.

As it turned out, it was the Stroudburg batters that should have been feeling the pressure.

Pleasant Valley's senior pitcher turned in an outstanding effort Thursday afternoon, tossing a two-hit shutout and striking out 12, to lead the Bears to a 2-0 victory and their fourth straight Mountain Valley Conference championship.

Deubler, who rotates every other game in the circle with teammate Kiersten Griesback, figured that she's be getting the nod in the title game if her team made it that far.

Teen cited for retail theft

Tamaqua police have cited a 15-year-old Tamaqua girl following an incident at the Family Dollar Store on May 11.

According to police the teen entered the Railroad Street store around 8 p.m., proceeded to take several lights and placed them inside her shirt. This was witnessed by an employee, who stopped the girl.

Her parents were notified and a citation for retail theft was issued.


Hazleton man cited in Tamaqua

A Hazleton man has been cited by Tamaqua police following an incident on May 10.

Officers were dispatched to 333 Rolling Mill Ave. at 3:50 a.m. after the Schuylkill County Communications Center received a call about a suspicious person in the area. The caller said a male, possibly intoxicated, was trying to enter the home.

Bill would help Carbon fund retirement increases

The Carbon County retirement board discussed a bill weaving its way through the state that would change the cost of living increase requirements on counties.

Robert Crampsie, county controller and secretary to the board said currently the cost of living increase requirements are retroactive.

That means if the county misses a year or two in cost of living increases to retirees, and then decides to give a cost of living increase the third year, the county is required to also give cost of living increases the two missed years as well.

Council awaits crash report No action on officer driving car in fatal crash Monday night

Nesquehoning officials are waiting for the state police to release their findings from a study of a fatal crash involving a borough patrolman before deciding what, if any, steps will be taken.

"We're anxious to get the reports and move on from this," council President David Hawk said.

The next council meeting is May 28.

"I don't know if they will have anything by then. Everything has been turned over to our insurance carrier," Hawk said. "We're just waiting at this point."

VFW Ladies Auxiliary sets special meeting

A special meeting of the Nesquehoning VFW Ladies Auxiliary will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The purpose of the meeting will be for electing officers for 2014-15.

It is imperative that all members attend this important meeting for the future of the auxiliary.
